Tips to help tackle obesity

‘I look in the mirror and don’t like what I see’ – are feeling this way?

Obesity can lead to various health problems, including hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.

Below, we share some of our tips…

EAT BREAKFAST EVERYDAY

It sounds like a given, but so many people still believe that avoiding breakfast every day will help them lose weight. Research has shown that skipping breakfast is more likely to make you snack throughout the day, which is a surefire way to gain weight. Remember the adage: eat breakfast like a king, lunch like  prince, and dinner like a pauper.

AVOID SNACKS THAT ARE RICH IN FAT, SUGAR OR SALT

Snacks high in fat and refined carbohydrates should be avoided as much as possible, instead, snack on whole fruits, carrots, celery and nuts.

LIMIT MEALS EATEN OUTSIDE YOUR HOME

It’s so easy to succumb to temptation once you leave your home, so try not to rely too much on fast good, or even meals from restaurants, as it’s hard to monitor how food is prepared.

CUT DOWN ON PORTION SIZES

It’s part of our culture to pile our plates sky-high with food, but refrain from eating large portions, and don’t feel duty-bound to clear your plate if you are already full up.

GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

New research suggests that women are gaining weight due to lack of sleep. Not getting enough rest apparently forces the body to produce an appetite hormone, so try to get to bed early and have at least seven hours sleep.

PARTICIPATE IN SOME TYPE OF EXERCISE

It’s recommended that women who are overweight or obese should try to get at least 60 minutes of moderate exercise per day. Go for brisk walks, or engage in fun physical activities like swimming or dancing.
